What is sex therapy?

Sex therapy is a focused form of counseling that helps you overcome the emotional, physical, medical, and relationship concerns that interfere with good sex.

Based upon your history and needs, I will work with you to design a step-by-step program to meet your personal goals.

Your sex counseling program includes learning and doing. We will identify areas to work on, and I will then design homework for you to do to supplement your counseling. Each week you will learn more about your sexuality and what works for you, decreasing your problems and increasing your pleasure and intimacy.

By combining psychological counseling, sex education and coaching, with approaches designed specifically to enhance your sexual functioning, you can achieve a higher degree of sexual satisfaction.

I tend to be more informal than many counselors, and believe in having open discussions rather than engaging in complicated diagnoses or psycho-jargon. While we may look into your past to provide an understanding of your current problems, I believe that the most effective work is done in the "here and now."

You will be treated with respect and dignity in a safe environment. All matters are strictly confidential.

What is sex coaching?

Sex coaching is derived from sex therapy. It is a new, action-oriented approach to resolving sexual problems based on the principles of sex therapy and life coaching. Coaching focuses on your future not on your past. It provides you with concrete skills and education to move you toward change. It presumes that you are healthy, not troubled.

Sex coaching involves a partnership between both of us working together. This is not traditional talk therapy; it is "out of the box" and designed to help you accelerate behavioral change. Each week we will co-create an action plan. You will be an active participant in your growth. With my guidance, you will take consistent steps forward toward meeting your goals.

I might make suggestions to you as a sex coach or provide specific advice that a traditional therapist would not feel comfortable doing. I might "prescribe" for you a trip to a sex shop, watching an erotic video or help you register for specific singles events.

Who can benefit from sex therapy?

Anyone who has a specific problem with sexuality and wants to make a positive change in his/her life can benefit from sex counseling. People may seek counseling because they're dissatisfied with their sexual lifestyle or suffer from inhibitions or sexual dysfunction. Couples may want to improve their sex life. Sex counseling is for anyone who wants to enrich their sex lives.

What are the advantages of sex therapy?

People go to sex counseling because they know they will receive help beyond what they can do on their own. Sometimes you just can't figure it out by yourself. Well intentioned spouses and family members don't have the training or objectivity to help you. A sex counselor offers you specialized training in treating all sorts of sexual dysfunctions.

Are you ready for sex therapy (not magic)?

Therapy works best when you're ready for the commitment. Are you concerned about the problems in your life? Do you want to feel better? Do you want to change? Or do you just want to passively attend sessions and hope your sex problems will vanish? Keep in mind that therapy is not magic. Like attending a class if you merely audit a class, attend occasionally, and don't do your homework assignments, you'll learn very little. If you're ready to make your happiness a priority, you're ready for therapy.

Why would I want to see A Clinical Sexologist or Sexuality Counselor?

A sexologist or sex counselor has the most extensive background in the evaluation and treatment of sexual dysfunction. Such a professional's education and training is focused specifically on learning techniques to resolve a variety of sexual problems. If you want to have your car fixed, you see a general mechanic. If you want to have your transmission repaired, you find a transmission specialist. It's very much the same way regarding the treatment of sexual issues. To treat sexual issues you need to see a specialist.

Are services confidential?

Absolutely. Your confidentiality is protected by law. Your session is totally confidential and would be shared only with your prior written consent.

What are some common sexual problems a sex therapist can help with?

early ejaculation
erectile dysfunction
low sex drive
orgasmic problems
body image
sex and relationship conflicts
painful intercourse
improving sexual self-esteem
intimate communication.

Is there ever touching involved in sex therapy?

No. No touching or nudity is ever appropriate in a psychotherapy session.

Do you work with sex surrogates?

Yes, on occasion, for the right client, surrogate therapy may be appropriate. Surrogate partner therapy is utilized only in selected cases.

I've never been to see a sex therapist before. What should I expect?

Usually the first session of counseling is an introduction. I will get to know you, ask some specific questions and identify the issues that need attention. I will gather information about you--the history of the problem, details about family, social, health and relationship status. It's important that I get a complete understanding of your lifestyle so that I can provide effective help.
