A few years ago, the April Journal of Counseling Psychology (Vol. 49, No. 2) published a study that suggested that that telephone counseling could be just as effective as traditional psychological counseling. The study was a continuation of a 1995 Consumer Reports finding that suggested patients could benefit from face-to-face counseling treatment.
The study's intent was to observe free telephone counseling services offered to employees (and their families) who worked for large or small companies in North America. Over a three-week period of time of regular 30 minute sessions, over 68% of the respondents claimed that that phone therapy was benefiting them and over 50% admitted they felt better exclusively because of the counseling sessions.
It's easy to understand why telephone counseling works, as well as, or even better than face-to-face therapy. Telephone counseling is convenient and usually less pricey than office sessions. Furthermore, the anonymity of telephone conversation allows clients to feel in control of the conversation and less shy because of eye contact. It is also advantageous for clients who do not have the funds for mental health care nor the circumstances allowing them to commute across town for an appointment. Last but not least, clients don't have to worry about physical appearance when discussing their problems.
We have seen the results and they are conclusive. Phone counseling is every bit as effective-if not more effective-than face-to-face therapy. Now enter the next evolution: telephone sex counseling. Of all the issues an individual might discuss in therapy, intimacy and relationship problems top the list of the most difficult to talk about in a face-to-face format. Clients may feel bashful or intimidated by a sex therapist in person. However, talking about such issues over a relaxed phone call conversation can relieve awkward tension and embarrassment.
Money, comfort and convenience. The advantages of telephone sex counseling are evident. This is the next phase of therapeutic counseling—customized service adapted to the needs of the individual, as opposed to the older traditional office model.
Thanks to modern technology with Skype, cell phones and other interactive devices, it's easier than ever before to deal with sexual problems and receive much needed help!
